Neck, Shoulder, and Back Pain from Large Breasts…here’s how PT can help!

As a physical therapist in Cary, NC, I frequently see patients struggling with neck, back, and shoulder pain. While many factors can contribute to this discomfort, a less commonly discussed yet significant cause for some individuals is the weight and distribution of large breasts. If you're experiencing neck, back, or shoulder pain caused by large breasts and wondering what can help, keep reading!

The excessive weight of larger breasts can pull the body's center of gravity forward. To compensate, the muscles in the neck, upper back, and shoulders work harder to maintain an upright posture. Over time, this constant strain can lead to muscle tension, trigger points (knots), and pain. You might experience tightness in your upper trapezius muscles (the ones that run from your neck to your shoulders), pain between your shoulder blades, and even headaches radiating from your neck. Inefficient posture, such as rounded shoulders and a forward head, further exacerbates these issues.

Fortunately, physical therapy can play a crucial role in alleviating neck back and shoulder pain caused by large breasts, but is often underutilized or not well-known as a treatment option! My approach focuses on addressing musculoskeletal tension and providing you with the tools to manage and reduce your pain long-term. Treatment often begins with a thorough assessment of your posture, range of motion, muscle strength, and any specific limitations you're experiencing.

Based on this assessment, a personalized treatment plan will be developed. This may include:

  • Manual Therapy: Techniques like soft tissue mobilization and trigger point dry needling can help to alleviate muscle tension and pain in the neck, back, and shoulders. Joint mobilization can also improve spinal flexibility and movement.

  • Therapeutic Exercises: Strengthening exercises target the postural muscles in your upper back (rhomboids, middle and lower trapezius) and core to provide better support and reduce the strain on your neck and shoulders. Stretching exercises improve flexibility and range of motion in the chest, shoulders, and neck, counteracting the forward pull. Examples include chin tucks, scapular squeezes, chest stretches, and gentle neck stretches.

  • Postural Education: Learning proper posture and body mechanics for daily activities is essential to prevent further strain. I’ll guide you on how to sit, stand, and lift correctly.

Beyond physical therapy sessions, there are other proactive steps you can take to manage neck back and shoulder pain caused by large breasts:

  • Proper Bra Support: Wearing a well-fitted, supportive bra is paramount. Ensure the bra provides adequate lift and distributes the weight evenly across your back and shoulders. Consider professional bra fittings.

  • Activity Modification: You may find that certain sports, fitness activities, and movements aggravate your symptoms. In PT, we can work on temporary modifications to these activities to help reduce your pain.

  • Ergonomic Adjustments: Optimize your workspace to promote good posture. Ensure your computer screen is at eye level and your chair provides adequate lumbar support.

  • Surgical Consult: Breast reduction surgery is an option for some people to reduce their pain associated with large breasts. If you need guidance or recommendations on who to consult with, I am happy to help.
